What is the Gospel?
It is the proclamation of God’s redemptive plan for humanity through Jesus Christ’s life, death, and resurrection.
It’s much more than just a collection of teachings and moral principles. It’s what’s at the heart of the Christian faith, and it holds transformative power!
The gospel message, rooted in Scripture, has profound truths and a life-changing impact on those who embrace it.
What is the Gospel Message?
In Biblical times, writers of the New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, to be specific) used the Greek word “euangelion” (which means “good news” or “glad tidings”) to convey the central message of their writings. This message is about Jesus Christ’s life, teachings, death, and resurrection and their significance for humanity.
So, when we speak of the gospel, we’re referring to the good news of salvation and reconciliation with God made possible through Jesus Christ.
In 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, the apostle Paul summarizes the gospel’s core message, “For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.”
This vital message—that Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and rose again—is the foundation of our faith and the source of our hope.
Redemption Through Christ’s Sacrifice
One definition of redemption is “the action of regaining or gaining possession of something in exchange for payment, or clearing a debt.”
Through His death on the cross, Jesus paid the ultimate price for our sins, offering us forgiveness and new life in Him.
This gave all believers freedom from the bondage of sin and reconciliation with God through Jesus Christ’s atoning sacrifice. This is what’s called redemption.
Ephesians 1:7 proclaims, “In him, we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.”
Forgiveness of Sins
One of the most profound aspects of the gospel message is the assurance of forgiveness of sins.
In Acts 10:43, Peter declares, “All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”
Through faith in Jesus Christ, we are restored to a right relationship with God and forgiven of our sins.
1 John 1:9 assures us, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
Forgiveness is not a “get out of jail” free card. This does not allow you to willfully continue to commit the same sin over and over.
In John 8:11, Jesus clearly states, “go, and from now on sin no more.” We’ll discuss what this means another time.
New Life in Christ
The gospel message offers forgiveness of sins and promises new life and transformation in Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:17 declares, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
The Kingdom is personal; its entrance requirements are repentance and spiritual rebirth.
“Jesus replied, ‘Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.’” – John 3:3
Part of this new life in Christ is baptism by total immersion.
Romans 6:3-4 declares, “Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized in Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”
Being fully immersed in the water illustrates dying and being buried with Christ, and coming out of the water signifies Christ’s resurrection.
Through faith in Jesus Christ, we are born again, filled with the Holy Spirit, and empowered to live a life that honors and glorifies God. Even though you will experience trouble, this new life is marked by righteousness, joy, and peace amid life’s challenges.
Embracing the Gospel Message
Embracing the gospel message is a personal encounter with the true, living God that transforms hearts and lives. It is not merely a matter of religious affiliation or intellectual assent.
Romans 10:9-10 outlines the simple yet profound steps of embracing the gospel and accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”
The Power of the Gospel
The gospel message is the heartbeat of the Christian faith. It’s the proclamation of God’s redemptive love and grace revealed in Jesus Christ. It offers forgiveness of sins, new life in Christ, and the hope of eternal salvation to all who believe.
In John 14:6, Jesus declares, “I am the way the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
By proclaiming Jesus as your Lord and Savior, embracing the gospel message, and living out its truths, we will experience the fullness of God’s love, joy, and peace.
And, since the gospel is so powerful, we are commissioned to share this life-saving message with others so that they, too, may come to know the saving power of Jesus Christ.
“He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.’” – Mark 16:15-16
